James' Show and Tell

Every Thursday at Pre-K, James has show and tell. Every Thursday at home during lunch James tells me the items that his classmates brought to show and tell. James even tells me who forgot their show and tell (Ekkkkk---four year olds say everything!). Thus, every Thursday I think “I hope that I remember to pick out an item with James for the following week”. Last Thursday I forgot show and tell, the first time this year that I forgot, but I knew it would happen at least once during the year. Over lunch, James announced last Thursday that I had forgot to put a show and tell into his backpack. Opppps! Then James announced proudly that he found a show and tell anyways. (The wheels in my mind were turning and thinking “Oh no, he showed his new Star Wars underwear in his extra change of clothes in his backpack or worse the pair of Yoda underwear he had on”.) With a smirk I asked James, “What item did you find to show your class?” James then told me, “I showed them a penny in my backpack. I showed them that Lincoln was on one side and the Lincoln Memorial is on the back…. The Lincoln Memorial I saw in WA D.C. with you!”. I was not only relieved that James had found a penny to show his classmates, but I loved his explanation of the penny. I am glad that our field trip to D.C. made an impression on James and he was excited about telling his classmates the explanation I told him when I showed James a penny before bedtime the day we went to D.C.. Unfortunately, the photo quality is poor… but that is James in the bottom left hand corner of the photo at the Lincoln Memorial.
